If you drive an electric vehicle, or plan to, it can be incredibly convenient (and cost-effective) to install a home EV charger.
Whether you’re a resident in Arran or offering EV friendly accommodation to visitors, here’s what you need to know about EV Charging at Home!
Why Install a Home Charger?
- Convenience: Charge overnight and start each day with a full battery, say goodbye to charging anxiety!
- Cost Savings: Home charging is typically cheaper than public charging, especially if you use off-peak energy tariffs, or an EV tariff.
- Guest Friendly: If you run a B&B or self-catering accommodation, offering EV charging can attract eco-conscious travellers.
Types of Home Chargers
- Slow charger (3kW): Can be plugged into a standard 3-pin socket, but very slow and not recommended for regular use.
- Fast charger (7kW or 22kW): Wall-mounted units that require professional installation and are much quicker and safer.
Most UK homes are single-phase, which supports 7kW charging. 22kW units require a three-phase supply, which is rare in standard homes.
Installation Process
- Choose a certified installer: Always use an approved installer for safety and compliance.
- Select your charger: Your installer will be able to talk you through pro’s and con’s to different types available.
- Apply for any grants: As of May 2025, the Domestics Charge Point Grant 25/26 grant has closed to new applicants. Island homes may still be eligible you can register interest here.
- Book your installation: Installation usually takes 2–4 hours, depending on your property setup.
Considerations on Arran
- Grid connection: Some rural properties may have limited capacity; speak with your energy provider if you’re unsure.
- Weatherproofing: Choose a charger rated for outdoor use (IP65 or higher) to handle Scottish weather.
- Smart features: Many chargers let you schedule charging times, track usage, and integrate with solar panels, ideal if you’re already living sustainably!
Installing an EV charger at home is a practical step toward greener living and supports Arran’s vision for a low-carbon future. It’s also a great way to make sustainable travel easier for visitors and the community alike.
