September always feels like a bit of a fresh start. Summer begins to wind down, schools are back, routines return and autumn is just around the corner.
So, this month at Arran Eco Savvy, we’re encouraging everyone to use that fresh-start feeling to have a Sustainable September on Arran!
The good news is that sustainable living doesn’t have to mean completely changing your lifestyle. Instead, it can start with small, realistic choices that work for you, your household and your budget. From wasting less food and choosing pre-loved to saving energy and travelling differently, there are plenty of ways to get involved.
Waste a Little Less This September
One of the simplest places to start is by looking at what we throw away.
Before buying something new, ask yourself: could I repair it, borrow it, buy it second-hand or find another use for something I already own?
September could be the month you finally repair that item you’ve been meaning to fix, have a wardrobe clear-out or start paying a little more attention to food waste. Check out Arran Repair Cafes regular Fix it Friday sessions at Brodick Library.
Our Community Shop in Whiting Bay is a great place to find pre-loved items and give existing things another lease of life. There is also ARCAS in Brodick across from the Ferry Terminal.
Choosing second-hand doesn’t just reduce waste. It can also save money and help support our work here on Arran.
Make Your Food Go Further
Food is another great place to make small sustainable changes! Planning meals before shopping, checking what you already have and finding creative ways to use leftovers can all help reduce food waste. Speaking of food waste, have you visited your local Food Share? Each night around the island volunteers collect short dated food from our coops and help distribute the food to our community!
Our Zero Waste Cafes also take place in communities across Arran throughout the month. They’re open to everyone and offer an opportunity to enjoy affordable food, meet other people and access low-cost dried goods, tinned foods and fresh local produce when available.
You don’t need to completely transform the way you eat. Even rescuing one meal’s worth of food from the bin is a good place to start! We also have lots of exciting cooking workshops coming up, email jess@arranecosavvy.org.uk to find out more information!
Leave the Car at Home for One Journey
Could you walk or cycle one journey that you would normally make by car?
That might mean walking to school, cycling to work, combining several errands into one journey or using public transport when it’s practical. On an island, we know that leaving the car behind isn’t realistic for every journey or every household. However, Sustainable September isn’t about perfection.
Instead, look for the journeys where you do have a choice! Even swapping one regular car journey for walking or cycling can help reduce emissions while adding a little more movement to your day.
Get Your Home Ready for Autumn
September is also the perfect time to think about energy use at home.
As temperatures begin to fall and evenings become darker, a few simple checks now could help you prepare for the colder months ahead.
You could:
- Check for draughts around windows and doors
- Make sure your heating is working properly
- Check your loft insulation
- Review your heating controls
- Submit an up-to-date meter reading
- Check your energy tariff and direct debit
- Switch frequently used bulbs to LEDs
- Switch appliances off rather than leaving them unnecessarily on standby
If you don’t know where to begin, our Energy Team offers free, impartial energy advice. Drop an email to sofi@arranecosavvy.org.uk for more help.
You don’t need to be planning a major retrofit. We’re just as happy to talk through your energy bill, heating controls or simple ways to make your home more comfortable.
Support Local Where You Can
Sustainability isn’t only about carbon emissions. It’s also about creating strong, resilient communities.
Shopping locally, supporting island businesses, volunteering, sharing skills and taking part in community activities can all contribute to a more sustainable Arran. September could be a great opportunity to discover something happening in your own community.
Come along to a Zero Waste Cafe, visit our Community Shop, attend an Eco Savvy event or simply find out more about a local organisation you’ve been meaning to support.
Try One Sustainable Swap
Sometimes the easiest way to make a change stick is to start with just one thing.
Your Sustainable September swap could be:
- Carrying a reusable water bottle
- Remembering your reusable shopping bags
- Buying something pre-loved instead of new
- Walking one regular journey
- Planning meals before shopping
- Using up leftovers
- Turning appliances off at the wall
- Repairing something instead of replacing it
- Borrowing an item you’ll only use occasionally
- Choosing local or seasonal food when possible
Pick something realistic and give it a try for the month. If it works for you, perhaps it’ll become part of your routine long after September has finished.
Do It Together
Individual actions matter, but we can achieve much more when communities act together. Whether we’re helping people reduce food waste, access bikes, understand their home energy use, repair and reuse items or learn more about climate action, our aim is to make sustainable choices practical, accessible and relevant to life on Arran.
And importantly, nobody needs to do everything!
One household might concentrate on reducing food waste, while another might cycle more. Someone else might finally tackle the draught coming through their front door. All of those actions have huge value.
What Will Your Sustainable September Look Like?
This September, why not choose one or two sustainable changes that work for you?
Start small. Keep it realistic. Get your family, friends or colleagues involved if you can. Most importantly, don’t worry about doing it perfectly.
Sustainable September on Arran is about lots of us making achievable changes that, together, can add up to something much bigger.
Throughout September, we’ll be sharing more ideas, practical advice, events and opportunities to get involved across Arran.
Follow Arran Eco Savvy throughout the month and let us know what you’re doing for your Sustainable September.
