Solar power has just become more accessible to households across Great Britain! From 27 August 2026, new regulations allow compliant plug-in solar panels to be used in homes in England, Scotland and Wales, opening up another way for households to generate some of their own renewable electricity.
You may also hear these systems referred to as balcony solar, although they aren’t just for balconies. They could potentially make small-scale solar generation accessible to people who may not be able to install a traditional rooftop solar PV system. So, what exactly is plug-in solar, how does it work, and could it be useful for households here on Arran?
What are plug-in solar panels?
Traditional rooftop solar PV usually involves several panels installed on your roof, connected into your home’s electrical system by a qualified installer. Plug-in solar is designed to be much smaller and simpler.
A solar panel captures energy from sunlight and generates direct current (DC) electricity. A microinverter then converts this into alternating current (AC), which can be used by appliances in your home. With a compliant plug-in system, once plugged in will mean that that electricity can be fed into your home through a standard socket. This means some of the electricity being used by your fridge, Wi-Fi router, television or other appliances during the day could come directly from your solar panels rather than being bought from the grid!
What has changed in the UK?
Until now, UK electrical safety regulations meant plug-in solar systems couldn’t be used in the same way as they already are in countries such as Germany.
That changed on 27 August 2026, when new regulations came into force allowing compliant plug-in solar systems in England, Scotland and Wales The change follows the UK Government’s wider Solar Roadmap, which looks at how solar power can play a much bigger role in the UK’s future energy system.
How much electricity can plug-in solar generate?
Under the new rules, a plug-in solar kit can produce up to 800W of power.
The UK Government estimates that a system could provide up to 20% of an average home’s electricity use, potentially saving a household up to £110 a year.
Of course, the amount of electricity you actually generate (and how much money you save) will depend on factors including where your panels are positioned, how much sunlight they receive and how much of the electricity you can use while it is being generated.
For somewhere like Arran, it’s also important to think carefully about where panels are positioned and how they are safely secured, particularly given our weather and exposure to strong winds!
Solar isn’t just for rooftops anymore
One of the most interesting things about plug-in solar is the potential to make renewable energy available to more types of homes. When we think about home solar, we usually picture a large array of panels fitted to a south-facing roof. That isn’t an option for everyone. You might live in a flat, rent your home, have a roof that isn’t suitable for a conventional solar installation or simply not be ready to invest in a full rooftop system.
Plug-in solar could offer another option.
Despite often being called “balcony solar”, these systems aren’t necessarily restricted to flats. Energy Saving Trust highlights experience from Germany, where plug-in solar has also proved popular with people living in single-family homes.
What if I rent my home?
Plug-in solar could be particularly interesting for renters, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you can install a system without permission.
Depending on where and how the panels are installed, you may need permission from your landlord, and your tenancy agreement may also contain relevant conditions. If you live in a flat, there may be additional considerations around the building itself or shared areas, so you may need permission from your factor.
The rules and practical guidance around plug-in solar are still very new, so this is an area where we’d recommend checking the latest guidance before buying anything, linked at the bottom of this blog.
Can I just buy a solar panel and plug it in?
No, and this is an important distinction.
The new regulations don’t mean that every plug-in solar product being advertised online is automatically suitable or compliant for use in Great Britain.
Products need to meet the appropriate safety and technical requirements. So, if you’re interested in plug-in solar, don’t assume that a product is safe or compliant simply because it’s described as “balcony solar” or comes fitted with a plug.
Check the latest guidance and make sure you understand the requirements before buying or installing a system.
Plug-in Solar doesn’t mean anything goes… there are still important electrical and safety requirements to follow:
Notify your Distribution Network Operator (DNO): You’ll need to let your local DNO know about your plug-in solar system via this site here.
Make sure your electrics are suitable: Your home’s electrical system and the socket you plan to use need to be suitable for plug-in solar. Systems should be connected directly to an appropriate weatherproof, exterior-rated 13A socket rather than through extension leads or cables running through windows. If you’re unsure, it’s a good idea to ask a qualified electrician to check your setup. Electrical Safety First also has useful guidance specifically covering plug-in solar systems.
Think carefully about where your panels will go: Solar panels are heavy and can be exposed to considerable wind forces. They need to be securely mounted to a structure capable of supporting them. This is particularly important here on Arran, where strong winds and exposed locations are something we need to take seriously!
Check whether you need permission: If you rent your home, or share responsibility for parts of your building, check with your landlord or building management before installing panels.
Remember the limit is one system per property: The new plug-in solar rules allow one compliant system per home. If you want to generate significantly more electricity, it may be worth exploring whether a conventional rooftop solar PV system would be more suitable.
Part of a much bigger solar shift
Plug-in solar is only one part of a much wider change taking place around solar power in the UK.
The Government’s Solar Roadmap also looks at increasing rooftop solar, improving access to finance, better recognising energy efficiency and renewable technologies when homes are valued, and improving the way solar potential is reflected in Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs).
It reflects a wider shift towards generating more of the electricity we use closer to home. For households, technologies such as solar panels, batteries, heat pumps and smart energy systems are increasingly changing the relationship we have with energy, from simply buying electricity from the grid to potentially generating, storing and managing more of it ourselves.
Could plug-in solar work on Arran?
We’re particularly interested to see how this technology develops and what it could mean for households on Arran.
For people who don’t have the space, budget or suitable roof for a conventional solar PV installation, smaller plug-in systems could potentially offer another route into generating renewable electricity at home.
However, the regulations are brand new, and products are only now entering the market. We’d recommend taking some time to understand the technology, costs, expected savings, safety requirements and any permissions you might need rather than rushing to buy a system.
