What is included in the Sustainable Directory?

Energy Performance Certificates

Energy performance certificates (EPC’s) tell you how energy efficient a building is.

They’ll tell you how costly it will be to heat and light your property, and what the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are likely to be.

EPC’s are valid for 10 years from the date of issue. If you don’t know if you have one or don’t have access to your EPC you can check the register here by searching via your postcode.

If you don’t have an EPC, it is vital you get one before starting your journey to improving your home. It will provide you with an understanding of the energy efficiency of your home. It will identify areas for improvement which could save you money and reduce your CO2 emissions.

For more information on EPCs visit this page here.

Keeping Warm for Less

Draught Proofing

Draught proofing is one of the most effective and cheapest ways to save energy and money. It is often thought of as the first step in moving towards a more energy efficient home.

For more information on draught proofing visit this page here.

Insulation

Insulating your home is one of the most effective ways to reduce heat loss, lower energy bills, and decrease your carbon footprint. Our guide provides an overview of various insulation options, including internal and external wall insulation, cavity wall insulation, underfloor insulation, and roof and loft insulation.

For more information on insulation visit this page here.

Green Energy Options

Heat Pumps

Heat pumps are an energy efficient and low carbon way to heat your home. They are suitable for almost all types of homes and may save you money on your energy bills.

Heat pumps gained popularity in the 1970’s however have been around for over 150 years,  and are steadily gaining popularity in the UK. Heat pumps will play a crucial part in helping Arran and Scotland achieve their net zero targets.

For more information on heat pumps visit our guide here.

Solar Panels or Solar Photovoltaics (PV)

Solar panels, or photovoltaics (PV), capture the sun’s energy and convert it into electricity to use in your home. Installing solar panels lets you use free, renewable, and clean energy to power your home and appliances. Plus any extra electricity can be sold to the grid or stored for later use.

For more information on Solar PV, including battery storage, solar water heating and tariffs, visit our guide here.

Biomass

Biomass fuel is organic material that can be used to produce energy such as: wood, plants, manure and household waste. All of these produce energy, however when it comes to heating your home wood is the most popular choice.

For more information on biomass, visit our guide here.

Hydroelectricity and Hydropower Systems

Hydroelectricity systems use flowing water to generate electricity. They offer a 24/7 generation of electricity due to the continuous flow of water. They are only suitable for specific sites , therefore not everyone can install one.

For more information on hydro, visit our guide here.

Wind Turbines

A wind turbine is a device that converts kinetic energy (the energy of motion) of wind energy into electrical energy. Wind turbines are the modern version of a windmill.
Although there are currently no wind turbines in Arran we have chosen to include them as they are a source of green energy.

For more information on wind turbines, visit our guide here.

Heating your Building

Radio Teleswitch Service

The Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) will be turned off on June 30, 2025. This is because the equipment that sends out the radio signal is no longer operational. In February 2025 we hosted an Energy Event at Corrie & Sannox hall. Local resident Bill MacGregor hosted a small talk on the RTS turn off and what it might mean for RTS users.

For more information, you can read our blog here.

Energy Tariffs

An energy tariff is a plan for how much you’ll pay for gas and electricity – remember, there is no mains gas available on Arran.  A tariff includes the rate you’ll pay for the electricity you use and a daily fee called a ‘standing charge’ – you’ll pay this no matter how much energy you use.

For more information on tariffs, including the smart export guarantee, visit our guide here.

Heating Controls

If you have central heating, heating controls help you keep your home comfortable and warm, without overheating it and wasting energy. By installing and using your heating controls effectively you could save money on your energy bills and lower your carbon emissions.

For more information on heating controls, visit our guide here.

Funding, Grants and Loans

Funding, Grants and Loans

Securing funding, grants, or loans can make installing renewable energy or making home improvements more affordable and accessible. We have added all currently available funding for both homeowners and businesses into one place. This information will be kept up to date and relevant.

For more information, visit our guide here.

Accredited Installers

Accredited Providers of Renewable Energy and Insulation

As a charity Arran Eco Savvy cannot make recommendations about installers; however, the list includes accredited installers who have installed insulation and/or renewable energy to homes and businesses on Arran.

For more information, visit our guide here.

Finding an Installer

When starting your journey to making home improvements, it is important to choose an accredited installer when installing a renewable energy system. We have created a short guide to help you before your installation and after your installation.
