This project tackles both problems by refurbishing these bikes and distributing them to individuals in our community who need them.
Working with the local council we have been able to divert second-hand bicycles away from going to waste. Bikes are taken to our Active Travel Hub to be repaired or used for working parts by our two skilled mechanics. It significantly contributes to the island’s circular economy and waste reduction. It is also helping to reduce CO2 emissions by both repairing bicycles and reducing the number of cars on the roads.
The Wee Bike Library is a bike loan project that is designed to grow with your child! We will set a child up with a bike and care instructions, and when they grow too tall for the bike they are welcomed back to exchange the bike for a bigger one. We also encourage them to bring the bike back for maintenance checks. Plus we even invite them to take part in the maintenance process. In this way we are able to support the growth of a cycling culture in the young generation of Arran.
We also have a range of refurbished adult bikes for sale using the ‘Pay what you can’ model. This is to ensure inclusivity, breaking down barriers to taking part in cycling. We have an ever changing range of bikes from road bikes to mountain bikes.
Our E-Bike Loan project promotes cycling as a real alternative to driving. It also tackles the barrier of steep hills between villages on Arran. The project has been running since 2019 and has supported a huge growth in the uptake of e-biking on Arran. We have a range of bikes including a cargo bike, a trike and an adapted e-bike suitable for 2 people. This ensures that cycling is accessible to all!
At the heart of the Bike Library we believe in access to bikes for all, delivered in a way that is in line with the ethos of cycling; fixing, reusing and respecting our planet.
If you are interested in using the The Bike Library, please email emma@arranecosavvy.org.uk. Or drop into our Active Travel Hub on Tuesdays between 11-2pm at the Ormidale Pavilion.
