Electric Vehicle (EV) adoption is steadily increasing across Scotland, and the Isle of Arran is embracing this shift towards sustainable transportation. Whether you’re a resident or a visitor, understanding the EV charging infrastructure on the island is essential for seamless travel.
EV Charging Infrastructure
Arran boasts a network of EV charging stations strategically located to serve both locals and tourists. These charging points are managed by various providers, including ChargePlace Scotland, Connekt EV Charging, and Project EV Pro.
To find the network you can use a variety of sites –
Understanding the Different Types of EV Chargers
Not all EV chargers are created equal! Whether you’re charging up between errands or topping up during a scenic lunch break, knowing the types of chargers available can help you plan your journey more effectively and avoid charge anxiety.
Slow Chargers (Up to 3kW)
- Best for: Overnight charging or when you’re staying somewhere for several hours.
- Charging time: 6 to 12 hours for a full charge, depending on battery size.
- Where you’ll find them: Home setups, smaller accommodations, or older public charging stations.
- Connector types: Usually Type 1 or Type 2.
Fast Chargers (7–22kW)
- Best for: Charging while shopping, visiting a cafe, or doing an activity that takes a couple of hours.
- Charging time: Around 3 to 4 hours for a full charge.
- Where you’ll find them: Hotels, visitor centres, some shops and distilleries (like Lagg and Lochranza on Arran).
- Connector types: Typically Type 2.
Rapid Chargers (43kW–50kW and up)
- Best for: Quick top-ups while on the move.
- Charging time: 20 to 60 minutes for an 80% charge.
- Where you’ll find them: Ferry terminal, transport hubs, or larger public charging stations (e.g. Brodick Ferry Terminal and Auchrannie Resort).
- Connector types: CHAdeMO or CCS (for DC charging), and some have AC Type 2.
Understanding these charger types helps ensure you’re using the most appropriate one for your vehicle and your plans on the island. For example, if you’re enjoying a hike or having lunch at the distillery, a fast charger might be ideal. If you’re in a rush, caught short or need a quick top-up before heading to the ferry, look for a rapid charger.
