The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a global call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure a fairer future for everyone. Created by the United Nations, these 17 goals guide governments, organisations and communities towards a more sustainable way of living.

However, the SDGs are not just for world leaders or international organisations. In fact, they are most powerful when they are put into action locally, including here on Arran.

What Are the Sustainable Development Goals?

The Sustainable Development Goals are a set of 17 interconnected goals agreed by all UN member states in 2015. Together, they aim to address the biggest social, environmental and economic challenges facing the world by 2030.

These goals include ending poverty and hunger, improving health and education, tackling climate change, protecting nature, and building strong, inclusive communities. Importantly, they recognise that these issues are linked, progress in one area often supports progress in others!

Why the SDGs Matter for Communities Like Arran

Although the SDGs are global, their impact is deeply local. On Arran, we see first-hand how issues like fuel poverty, food access, transport, housing and climate resilience affect everyday life.

For example, reducing carbon emissions also helps create warmer homes, lower energy bills, and healthier communities. Similarly, supporting local food systems reduces waste, strengthens the local economy and improves wellbeing. Because of this, the SDGs offer a helpful framework for connecting environmental action with social justice.

Which Sustainable Development Goals Do We Work Towards?

At Arran Eco Savvy, many of our projects align naturally with the SDGs. In particular, our work supports:

Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy

We help households and businesses understand energy efficiency, access funding, and transition to renewable energy, making clean energy more accessible for all.

Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities

Through projects like active travel, reuse initiatives and community events, we support resilient, inclusive and low-carbon communities across Arran.

Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

Our Zero Waste Cafes, Community Shop and Food Share redistribution projects help reduce waste, encourage reuse and support a circular economy.

Goal 13: Climate Action

From climate literacy events to practical home energy advice, we empower people to take meaningful action on climate change.

Goal 15: Life on Land

By celebrating Arran’s natural environment and working with local partners, we support biodiversity, nature connection and land stewardship.

How Local Action Supports Global Goals

While global challenges can feel overwhelming, local action makes a real difference. Every community event, energy upgrade or shared meal contributes to wider change. Moreover, when people feel involved and empowered, climate action becomes positive and practical rather than daunting.

That’s why community-led initiatives are essential. They build trust, share knowledge and ensure solutions work for local needs.

How You Can Get Involved

You don’t need to tackle all 17 goals at once. Small, everyday actions, such as reducing waste, choosing active travel, supporting local food or improving home energy efficiency, all contribute to the SDGs.

By getting involved with local projects, attending events or simply starting conversations, you are already part of the solution.

The Sustainable Development Goals give us a shared vision for a fairer, healthier and more resilient future. When we bring these goals to life at a local level, they become achievable, meaningful and hopeful.

Together, we can show that sustainable living is not only good for the planet, it is also good for people and place!
