Laura Owens, Activities Coordinator at Montrose House in Brodick put together a case study on one of their residents Leigh Hocking and how he is able to reconnect with his community via the Zero Waste Cafe.

In her case study Laura said the Zero Waste Cafe provides a place for several of their members to meet and interact with old friends and new faces. It allows them to continue to feel connected to the community and helps to reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness.

Leigh was a long standing member of the Corrie Church congregation. However when the church closed he lost contact with many of his friends from there as he can no longer visit the village independently.

The Zero Waste Cafe provides Leigh with the opportunity to meet and catch up with his friends from Corrie, in a social setting. The cafe is one of the few activities in which Leigh engages. On a recent visit he read through the leaflets available to get a better understanding of the ethos of the cafe. We then discuss how we can take forward some of the ideas and implement them within Montrose House. This has led us to arrange a sustainable food project with the local primary school. We will look at growing herbs, fruit and vegetables within our gardens, which we can then incorporate into our meals.

Leigh says

“The Zero Waste Cafe has given me the opportunity to reconnect with the community and friends. I am pleased to see the people and to visit Corrie again. The cafes gives me something to look forward to. It’s nice to see so many people to attend, this leads me to believe it is a necessity within the village.”

Zero Waste Cafe

Our Zero Waste Cafe travels around Arran visiting two villages each week on a Tuesday and Wednesday. The cafes are open to all, with no need to book!

Each week we have a selection of warm soup and bread, refreshments and cakes. We also stock a range of zero waste dispensers, local fresh produce when available and a range of tins. We operate on a guided donation basis.

To find out where our next cafe will be and when, visit out what’s on page.
