Climate change is something we hear about a lot, but what does it really mean, and how does it affect us here in Arran and Scotland? Let’s break it down in simple terms.

What is Climate Change?
Climate change is the long-term shift in temperatures and weather patterns. While some changes are natural, since the 1800s, human activities, especially burning fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas, have been the main driver. These activities release greenhouse gases (like carbon dioxide) into the atmosphere, trapping heat and making the planet warmer.
It’s a bit like putting an extra-thick blanket over the Earth. At first, it might feel cosy, but soon it becomes uncomfortable, leading to big changes in our environment. 2023 was the warmest year on record.
How is Climate Change Affecting Arran?
Here in Arran and Scotland, we are already feeling the effects of a changing climate:
More Rain and Flooding – Winters are becoming wetter, leading to more floods that damage homes, roads, and farmland.
Hotter Summers – We’re seeing warmer, drier summers, which can be lovely for a day out but stressful for wildlife, farming, and even our health.
Rising Sea Levels – As ice melts and oceans warm up, sea levels are rising. Some coastal areas in Scotland are already experiencing more erosion and flooding.
Impact on Wildlife – Many animals and plants are struggling to adapt to changing seasons and temperatures, putting our famous biodiversity at risk.
What Can We Do About It?
The good news is there’s a lot we can do, and every small action adds up!
Cut Carbon Emissions:
- Walk, cycle, or use public transport when you can.
- Switch to renewable energy if possible.
- Make your home more energy-efficient by improving insulation and using LED bulbs.
Support Local and Seasonal:
- Buying local produce reduces the carbon footprint from transport.
- Eating seasonal foods also supports our farmers and tastes better too!
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repair, and Rehome:
- Cut down on waste by reusing items, repairing things, and recycling properly.
- Get involved with initiatives like our Zero Waste Cafes and visit community repair workshops like Arran Repair Cafe.
Protect Nature:
- Plant trees, create wildlife-friendly gardens, and support rewilding projects.
- Healthy natural spaces absorb carbon and help protect against floods.
Speak Up:
- Talk about climate change with friends and family.
- Support policies and businesses that prioritise sustainability.
