Here at Arran Eco Savvy, we actively promote sustainable living and protecting our beautiful island environment. We welcome the upcoming ban on disposable vapes in the UK, set to take effect on the 1st of June, 2025. This legislation marks a significant step towards reducing environmental harm and fostering a healthier community.

Disposable vapes have become a growing environmental concern. Did you know recent research indicates that over 8 million vapes are discarded or improperly recycled each week in the UK, equating to approximately 13 vapes every second. These devices often end up in landfills or as litter, releasing toxic substances into the environment as they degrade.

Each vape contains a lithium-ion battery, and collectively, the lithium discarded annually from vapes could power around 5,000 electric vehicles . Improper disposal not only wastes valuable resources but also poses fire risks in waste facilities due to battery combustion.

On Arran and across Scotland, we’re lucky to live close to nature, but disposable vape litter puts that nature at risk.

These colourful, plastic devices are often mistaken for food by birds and marine animals. Swallowing vapes or their broken parts can lead to choking, internal injury, or even death. The batteries and chemicals inside them can also leak into our lochs and seas, harming aquatic life and poisoning delicate marine ecosystems.

We’ve already seen an increase in vape litter washing up on our beaches. Not only is this unsightly, but it adds to the growing problem of plastic and toxic pollution in our coastal waters. Threatening wildlife and spoiling the natural beauty of our island.

The ban also aims to curb the rising trend of youth vaping. Disposable vapes, with their appealing flavors and designs, have attracted younger demographics, raising health concerns.

A Step Towards a Greener Future

The ban on disposable vapes is a proactive measure to address these environmental challenges. By eliminating single-use vapes, we reduce plastic waste, conserve critical materials like lithium and copper, and mitigate pollution risks. This aligns with our mission at Arran Eco Savvy to promote sustainable practices and protect our natural surroundings.

While the ban targets disposable vapes, it encourages the adoption of reusable vaping devices, which have a lower environmental footprint when used responsibly.

We advocate for comprehensive recycling programs and increased public awareness to ensure that all vaping products are disposed of safely and sustainably.

You can recycle vapes safely at the three Coop Food stores as well as the Coup in Brodick.

Our Commitment

At Arran Eco Savvy, we support initiatives that lead to a cleaner, healthier environment. The disposable vape ban is a positive development in our collective effort to reduce waste and promote sustainability. We encourage our community to embrace this change and continue working together towards a greener future.
