Here at Arran Eco Savvy, we talk a lot about sustainability, waste reduction, and living well for less but have you ever heard us mention the circular economy? It might sound like something from an economics textbook, but it’s actually a simple and powerful idea that can help us care for our environment, support our local economy, and build a stronger and more resilient Arran.

So, what is it?

Imagine if nothing went to waste. That’s the basic idea behind a circular economy. Instead of the traditional take, make, use, bin approach where resources are used once and thrown away, a circular economy is more like a circle (hence the name!). In this system, materials and products are reused, repaired, shared, and recycled for as long as possible.

It’s about keeping things in use and getting the most value out of them, rather than creating waste.

How does it work in everyday life?

You’re probably already doing some circular economy actions without even realising it:

  • Buying second-hand from our Eco Savvy Community Shop
  • Repairing clothes, bikes, or appliances instead of replacing them
  • Borrowing tools, bikes, or books instead of buying new ones
  • Sharing unwanted items through donation or swapping
  • Composting food scraps to create healthy soil for growing more food

Every time you repair instead of replace, or donate instead of dump, you’re helping build a more circular economy right here on Arran.

Why does it matter for the island?

On an island like Arran, we know how important it is to make the most of what we have. Transporting goods on and off the island takes energy and resources. Waste disposal is costly and impacts our beautiful environment. By reusing, repairing, and recycling locally, we reduce pressure on our natural resources and cut down on pollution.

Plus, a circular economy helps build community. Our Zero Waste Cafes, clothing swaps, food share and bike libraries are all ways of bringing people together while sharing skills and resources.

What is Arran Eco Savvy doing?

We’re proud to be leading the way in making a circular economy real on Arran. Here’s how:

  • Running the Eco Savvy Community Shop, where items get a second life
  • Offering e-bike loans and repairs to reduce transport waste
  • Promoting food share to reduce short dated food from going to waste
  • Hosting repair events, swap shops, and skills workshops
  • Supporting composting and growing local food
  • Partnering with local groups to share resources and reduce waste island-wide

How can you get involved?

  • Visit our Community Shop and think second-hand first
  • Join us at a Zero Waste Cafe
  • Try an e-bike or attend one of our energy-saving events
  • Learn a new skill, like mending (visit an Arran Repair Cafe) or composting
  • Encourage others to reduce waste and support local reuse efforts

A circular economy isn’t just about “being green” it’s about making smart, sustainable choices that work for our community, our economy, and our environment. On Arran, we have an amazing opportunity to lead by example. Let’s keep the circle going.
