With fuel prices continuing to climb across the UK, many households on Arran are feeling the pressure.

Whether you’re relying on oil, LPG, electricity, or solid fuels, energy costs are taking a bigger bite out of household budgets, and for island communities like ours, the impact can be even more severe.

Transporting fuel to the island adds extra cost, and limited supplier choice can mean less competitive pricing. Combined with older, hard-to-heat homes and rising living costs, it’s no wonder more people are looking for ways to save energy and stretch their money further.

But there are things we can do, and support is out there.

5 Ways to Save Energy and Cut Costs at Home

  1. Stop the draughts: Simple draught-proofing around doors, windows, and letterboxes can make a big difference. Even DIY solutions like rolled towels at the bottom of doors help.
  2. Switch off standby: Gadgets and appliances left on standby can cost you £65+ a year. Turn them off at the wall when not in use.
  3. Use heating controls wisely: Turning your thermostat down by just 1°C can save up to 10% on your heating bill.
  4. Insulate where you can: If you have accessible loft space, even topping up insulation can reduce heat loss. Thermal curtains also help keep the heat in.
  5. Wash smart: Run your washing machine at cold and air-dry when possible. Reducing tumble dryer use saves both energy and money.

Help Is Available

The Independent Food Aid Network, along with other organisations including Arran Eco Savvy and Arran CVS have put together a handy leaflet to help you navigate money worries. As well as an online form.

Home Energy Scotland offers free, impartial advice and can help you access funding for home improvements like insulation, heat pumps, and more. In some cases, they can arrange a free home energy visit to talk through what’s possible in your home.

Locally, our Sustainable Directory lists trusted businesses and tradespeople on Arran and who will visit Arran who can help with energy upgrades, repairs, and efficiency improvements.

And if you’re struggling with energy costs, there are emergency support options available, from energy vouchers to advice on payment plans. Don’t wait until things get worse. Reach out.
