In Whiting Bay, volunteers at our Community Shop have been quietly making a big impact. For over eleven years, our dedicated team has tested thousands of donated electrical appliances, making sure they are safe, functional, and ready for resale.
This effort has now saved an incredible 3,080 items from going to landfill! A huge win for the island’s circular economy and sustainability goals
Every week, our volunteers test appliances such as kettles, toasters, lamps, radios, and even guitar amplifiers. Each item that passes safety checks is given a new lease of life and sold affordably in our shop.
This not only keeps waste out of landfill but also ensures local people can buy reliable, tested appliances at a fraction of the cost of new ones. It’s a simple yet powerful way to reduce waste and support sustainable living on Arran.
A Full Circle Sustainability Story
The 3,080th item tested was a guitar amplifier, a very special one. It was first tested back in 2014 as the 27th item to pass through our workshop. Then, after years of use, it was donated back, retested, and passed again. Now, it’s ready to bring joy to a new home.
As Nikki, one of our volunteers, explained:
“It’s the perfect example of sustainability in action. Instead of being thrown away, it’s been given a second chance. This reduces demand for new manufacturing and saves valuable resources.”
The Impact of Waste Reduction
By keeping more than 3,000 electrical items in use, Eco Savvy has prevented tens of thousands of kilograms of waste from ending up in landfill. This achievement shows the power of community action in protecting our environment.
The Arran Eco Savvy Community Shop always welcomes donations of working or repairable electrical items. We also encourage new volunteers to join our team and help us continue reducing waste on the island.
Pop into the shop to find your next bargain – and maybe even take home the 3,081st item saved from landfill. Together, we can build a stronger, more sustainable Arran.
