As part of our Countdown to Autumn series, we’re sharing simple steps to help you prepare your home before the colder weather arrives.
With just five weeks until autumn, now is the perfect time to check your loft insulation. Because heat naturally rises, an uninsulated or poorly insulated loft can allow a significant amount of warmth to escape. Fortunately, checking your insulation is a simple task that could make a real difference to your comfort and energy use this winter.
Why is loft insulation important?
When your home is heated, warm air naturally rises towards the roof. If your loft isn’t insulated properly, much of that valuable heat can escape before it has a chance to warm your home.
According to the Energy Saving Trust, around 25% of the heat lost from an uninsulated home can escape through the roof. Improving your loft insulation helps keep more of that heat where it belongs… inside your home!
Benefits of good loft insulation include:
- Helping your home stay warmer for longer.
- Reducing heat loss through the roof.
- Lowering the amount of energy needed to heat your home.
- Improving comfort throughout the winter months.
- Reducing your home’s carbon emissions.
How much loft insulation should you have?
If your loft is insulated with mineral wool, current building regulations recommend a depth of at least 270mm.
Many homes already have some insulation, but it may not be deep enough to provide the best level of protection against heat loss. Over time, insulation can also become compressed or uneven, reducing its effectiveness.
If it’s safe to access your loft, take a quick look to see how deep your insulation is.
How can you check your loft insulation?
Checking your loft insulation doesn’t need to take long.
When it’s safe to do so:
- Measure the depth of your insulation.
- Look for areas where insulation is missing or has been disturbed.
- Check whether insulation is spread evenly across the loft floor.
- Make sure loft hatches close properly to help reduce heat loss.
Remember to only enter your loft if it is safe and accessible. Avoid standing between the joists, as this can damage ceilings below.
Not sure how deep your insulation is?
The UK Government has produced a useful Loft Insulation Depth Ruler and Fact Sheet to help homeowners check whether their insulation is deep enough.
You can download it here:

It’s a simple guide that explains recommended insulation depths and includes a printable ruler to help you measure what you already have.
Could you improve your home’s insulation?
If your loft insulation is below the recommended depth, it may be worth considering topping it up before winter arrives.
While insulation is an investment, it can improve comfort and reduce heat loss for many years to come. If you’re unsure where to start, impartial advice can help you understand your options and identify any support that may be available.
