Savvy Film Club (online & FREE!)
Tomorrow evening, Tuesday 30th June, we will be screening Local Food Roots.
Local Food Roots is a film that looks at the origins of the local food movement in the UK. It explores an emerging food culture in which people want to know the story of how their food is produced.
Following the BSE and Foot and Mouth scandals (this film does show some graphic imagery from news reports at the time) consumer confidence was very low. The traceability and transparency of local food and the associated health and climate benefits are examined in the film.
We hear from farmers selling direct, from local food distributors, farmers’ market stallholders to public health stakeholders and elected officials. The film is an inspirational immersion in local food culture, with stories that cover the urban, rural, large and small scales.
“Food is the focal point for changing the world” as one of the interviewees states. We invite you to join us for this film and in discussion afterwards to help us imagine what changes we can make locally on Arran to improve our health and reduce our carbon foodprint.
The film has a running time of 35 minutes. Prior to the screening we will send you a web link to enable you to watch the film for free, along with simple instructions about how to view and how to take part in the online chat.
After the film there will be an opportunity to have a discussion within the comments on the Facebook event page. If you would like to watch this film with us could you please let us know by:
- emailing jess.ecosavvy@gmail.com
- click “Going” or “Reserve a spot” on the facebook event
We will then be in touch on Tuesday 30th with instructions of how to watch the film for free. We really hope that you will join us to watch the film and join in with the discussion afterwards!

Arran producer profiles
You can find out more about our wonderful island producers by taking a look through the profiles we created showcasing the amazing work they do!
We are lucky to live in a place where our producers take sustainability seriously. From zero waste purchasing at Bay Stores to vegetables grown organically at Woodside Farm and artisan bread baked with Scottish flour at Blackwater Bakehouse, we are blessed to have such a wealth of good food to choose from. Head over to our website for the complete list. Blackwater Bakehouse is our featured one below!
Gardening with Colin on Arran
We might be a bit late catching on to this, but Colin Guthrie has been creating some fantastic videos (with Utter Nonsense films) detailing his progress in the garden over the past few months.
He has produced 10 videos ranging from 2-12 minutes in length, looking at things such as compost, homemade biochar, wormeries and more!
We highly recommend watching these as they share some excellent tips on how to save money and time from a local gardener! You can find his dedicated Youtube playlist here!
Fermentation Demonstration video
Food coordinator Jess got in the kitchen last week to film the first of our online demonstration videos. In this one she looks at fermentation and shows how to make a simple sauerkraut! Grab 800 grams cabbage, 19 grams salt, a clean mixing bowl and a kilner jar and head over to youtube to learn how to make your own! As well as being extremely healthy, fermentation increases the bioavailability of nutrients, it is also a great way to extend the shelf life of produce in your kitchen, allowing you to reduce food waste. As well as this, fermenting foods is fun and once you know the basics you can experiment with many variations! You can find more recipes and read more about the fermentation process in our guide here.
Savvy food survey
Unfortunately we are still unable to run workshops in person. We hope that this will change in the future and we can get back to cooking together and skill sharing!
In the meantime, we are really interested to know what other kinds of workshops/ demonstrations you would like to see! Please complete our quick 2 minute survey to let us know your thoughts.
In the spirit of having more local food available, everyone who fills in the survey will receive a Little Garden seedling kit. There are 9 types of vegetable and 3 types of flower available (it’s a luck dip!) Please include your address at the end of the survey if you would like us to send you one!
