A New Message from Eco Savvy

Carbon Literacy Training

As Arran’s environmental charity we are very pleased to now be able to offer carbon literacy training to schools, organisations and individuals.

What is “carbon literacy”?

When people are carbon literate they have the knowledge and motivation to make positive changes to their lives in order to address climate change.

Why is carbon literacy important?

Following carbon literacy training, people typically adopt changes which result in carbon savings of 5-15% per person.

What is involved in a carbon literacy training day?

The training day is an interesting day of learning, debate, conversation & activities where you can get a much deeper understanding of the issues around climate change on a global scale, but also looking specifically at Arran & Scotland.  In brief, the training day looks at:

  • the science of climate change
  • the effects globally, in Scotland and for Arran
  • climate inequality
  • what can be done to address climate change

More than just small personal changes, carbon literacy highlights the need for substantial change & supports you, as an individual, to have a cascade effect on a much wider audience – whether it’s in your workplace, community, school, university, or another setting!

It is not mandatory but participants have the option to become accredited “carbon literate” and receive a certificate from the overseeing body, the Carbon Literacy Project. This is done by using new knowledge to fill in a short form and make at least two significant low-carbon pledges.

Despite the serious nature of the subject, the course is designed to be interesting, supportive, and positive (we will also provide cake!).
